Question
Inquiry Lab: Identifying Unknown Compounds Introduction: The mole is important in chemistry because it provides a way to measure and count the number of atoms or molecules even though we cannot see these tiny particles. One mole of an element or compound contains 6.02times 10^23 atoms or molecules, a quantity known as Avogadro's number. Moles also provide a standardized way of describing chemical quantities and comparing elements. The Mole is related to quantities such as mass and volume, and can be used to determine the amounts of these measurements of matter also. In order to use mass (or weight) to determine the number of moles of a substance, you must also know the molar mass of the substance. The molar mass is the mass in grams of one mole of any element or compound (measured in grams/mole) . To determine the molar mass for a compound you just add up the molar masses of all the atoms present in a compound. By knowing the molar mass of a compound and the mass of a sample of that compound, you can determine the number of moles. Your Task: You will be given six sealed bags (Don't open the bags!). Each bag is filled with one of the chemical compounds listed below, and labeled with the number of moles of the compound that are inside the bag. Your task will be to identify the chemical compounds in each bag.The unknown compounds that you are trying to identify are the following: - Sodium Bicarbonate, NaHCO_(3) - Sugar, C_(12)H_(22)O_(11) - Magnesium Sulfate, MgSO_(4) - Potassium Carbonate, K_(2)CO_(3) - Ammonium Chloride, NHáCl Sodium Chloride, NaCl The Essential Question: What are the identities of the unknown compounds? Materials: 6 plastic bags of unknown compounds - Electronic balance - 1 empty plastic bag Safety Precautions: Follow all normal lab safety rules. Ammonium chloride potassium carbonate, and magnesium sulfate are tissue irritants and are toxic if ingested. Getting Started: To answer the essential question, you will need to design and conduct an investigation. To accomplish this task, you must Jetermine the type of data you need to collect", "ow you will collect the data, and how you will analyze the data. To determine what type of data you need to collect, think about what type of measurements you will need to make during your investigation To determine how you will collect and analyze the data, think about the following questions:

To identify the compounds, you need to know the molar mass of each compound. The molar mass is the mass in grams of one mole of any element or compound. By knowing the molar mass of a compound and the mass of a sample of that compound, you can determine the number of moles. This information can be used to identify the compounds.
