HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system, specifically the CD4 cells, which are a type of T cell that helps the immune system fight off infections. If left untreated, HIV can progress to the advanced stage of the disease, known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). The stages of HIV infection can be divided into three main phases: acute infection, clinical latency, and AIDS.

1. Acute infection:
During the acute infection phase, which typically occurs 2-4 weeks after exposure to the virus, individuals may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. This phase is also known as primary HIV infection or acute retroviral syndrome. These symptoms usually resolve on their own within a few weeks, and many people may not even realize they have been infected.
2. Clinical latency:
The clinical latency phase, also known as the asymptomatic phase, can last for several years without any noticeable symptoms. During this phase, the virus is still active but reproduces at very low levels. People may not have any symptoms or may have mild, non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, skin rashes, or mouth ulcers. It is important to note that individuals in this phase can still transmit the virus to others.
3. AIDS:
If left untreated, HIV infection can progress to the advanced stage of the disease, known as AIDS. This stage is characterized by the development of certain cancers, infections, or other severe clinical conditions that occur as a result of the severely weakened immune system. Some common symptoms of AIDS include:
* Rapid weight loss
* Prolonged swelling of the lymph glands
* Diarrhea that lasts for more than a week
* Sores of the mouth, anus, or genitals
* Pneumonia
* Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids
* Memory loss, depression, and other neurologic disorders

It is important to note that with the advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART), many people living with HIV can now manage their condition effectively, maintain a healthy immune system, and live long and fulfilling lives. Regular medical check-ups, early diagnosis, and adherence to ART are crucial in managing HIV infection.
