This is because the tails are composed of fatty acid chains, which are nonpolar and thus, cannot form hydrogen bonds with water molecules.<br /><br />## Step 4<br />When phospholipids come together to form a bilayer, the hydrophilic heads face outwards, towards the water, while the hydrophobic tails face inwards, away from the water.
