Lab 8-19 Title: Earth Movements Aim: To construct a simple seismograph to record earth movement. Background Information; Do you know what a seismometer is?It's a machine that shows earthquakes or other movement. Apparatus and materials:cardboard box with the flaps cut off, plastic cup, felt tip marker, string, cup of small rocks marbles, or bolts , clay, paper , scissors. Procedure 1. First, take a box and open the top . Cut off the flaps and turn the box so the open side faces you. 2. Using scissors, poke two holes next to each other in the center of the top of the box. You may want to ask an adult to help with the scissors. 5. Poke one hole in the center of the bottom of the plastic cup, one hole along the rim of the cup, and another hole exactly opposite that hole. 6. Put the marker through the hole in the center of the bottom of the cup The writing end should be sticking out of the bottom of the cup. 7. Put some clay around the hole so that the marker won't move. 8. Cut a 45cm piece of string (although if you have a bigger box, you may need a longer piece) and thread it through the two holes along the rim of the cup.

It looks like you're working on a project to construct a simple seismograph. Let's continue with the procedure and complete the setup:<br /><br />**Procedure (continued):**<br /><br />9. Tie the ends of the string together so that the cup hangs from the top of the box. The marker should be pointing downwards, ready to write on a piece of paper placed below it.<br /><br />10. Place a piece of paper on the bottom of the box directly under the hanging marker. This will serve as the recording surface for any movements.<br /><br />11. Fill the plastic cup with small rocks, marbles, or bolts to add weight. This will help stabilize the marker and make it more sensitive to vibrations.<br /><br />12. Gently swing the box back and forth or tap it lightly to simulate earth movements. Observe how the marker records these movements on the paper.<br /><br />13. Experiment with different weights in the cup and different types of movements to see how they affect the recordings.<br /><br />**Conclusion:**<br /><br />By following these steps, you've constructed a simple seismograph that can record movements. This model demonstrates the basic principles of how a real seismometer works by detecting and recording vibrations. You can use this setup to explore how different factors, such as weight and movement intensity, influence the seismograph's sensitivity and accuracy.
